Pura Vida!

One of our favorite things about Costa Rica are…Costa Ricans! You may also call us ticos. Countrywide people are the proud stewards of Costa Rica’s natural heritage.

Costa Rica is incredibly friendly. English is widely spoken in hotels and restaurants, many locations abide to international standards and getting around is easy.

As the Ticos say: ¡Costa Rica es Pura Vida! The unofficial motto that invites you to purely enjoy life.

In contrast to the rest of Central America, which suffered a series of ruthless dictators and bloody civil wars in the 20th century, Costa Rica is a stable democracy that abolished its army in 1949 and invested in its people and education.

Today its citizens are among the most educated and prosperous in Latin America.

They are also among the most environmentally conscious. Ticos have set aside over 25% of their country as national parks or preserves, and ecotourism is now a major part of the economy.

As such, Costa Rica has become a powerful role model for other developing countries, demonstrating that environmentalism and economic growth can go hand in hand.

Costa Rica is a small country with big attributes: the most peaceful country in Central America, the most democratic country in Latin America, and one of the most biodiversity places on earth. The country’s name means, “Rich Coast”. An early explorer thought that was filled with gold, but its stunning natural beauty is even more valuable.

The official language is Spanish, many people speak English very well as it is taught in schools or learnt from memorable conversations with tourists.

It is said to be the happiest country in the world, you can see different landscapes at very short distances, and it has been recently named by the Global Tourism Monitor world’s best holiday experience #1.

Visitors are treated to gorgeous beaches, lush rainforests, active volcanoes and wide variety of wildlife.

In few miles visitors can enjoy a variety of natural beauty, diverse landscapes, microclimates, National Park’s lots of sun, beaches, different tours of adventure, nature and culture; components all visitors to have and unforgotten experience in their vacations in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica is a country, not an island, located in Central America, between Panama and Nicaragua.

Costa Rica is sandwiched between two continents and two oceans, attracting an amazing diversity of plants and animals.

Costa Rica’s biodiversity is impressive. Its Pacific Coast is the transition zone between the tropical dry forests of the north and the tropical rainforests of the south.

This varied geography supports an astonishing range of plants and animals. All told, Costa Rica is home to roughly 5% of the world’s biodiversity, including nearly 10% of the world’s butterfly species, 10% of the world’s bat species and 20% of the world’s hummingbird species.

Even more impressive, all this natural wonder is packed into a country just 300 km (186 miles) long by 120 km (75 miles) wide. No other area of comparable size contains so much biodiversity in the Western Hemisphere.

Agriculture is the basis of the Costa Rican economy.

Coffee has historically been the most important source of foreign exchange for the country and Costa Rica produces one of the best coffees in the world.

The second most important traditional product is bananas, which are huge farms especially in the Atlantic region of the country.

Other important are like pineapple, sugar, orange, rice and ornamental plants.

While the basis of the national economy is agriculture, tourism has gained an increasing importance source of income for the country in recent years and continues to grow, creating new jobs and promoting biodiversity conservation.

Typical dishes of Costa Rica are the “casados” which literally translate into “married” as it is said to have started when newlyweds would lovingly prepare a great lunch with rice, beans, plantains, salad, tortillas with meat, chicken or fish. A must try!

The most Christmas food is tamales. We don’t want you to miss it, so we have them at Pumilio for breakfast year-round!

Also, there are so many delicious fruits depending on the season, we can offer them at Pumilio!
