Carara Biological Reserve is a transitional forest between tropical dry forest and the rainforest that stretches down to the southern Pacific. Relatively small at just 4,700 hectares (11,615 acres), Carara National Park is one of the few remaining breeding grounds for the majestic scarlet macaw, which is easily spotted during the morning and afternoon.

The park is also a pre-colonial archeological site, with rivers, lakes and waterfalls. Here, you'll find monkeys, aracari toucans, raccoons, coatis, and a wide variety of bird species.
